Rio Tinto Commits $1.8 Billion to Brockman Syncline 1 Mine Extension

Rio Tinto has announced a major $1.8 billion investment to expand its Brockman Syncline 1 (BS1) iron ore mine in Western Australia’s Pilbara region. The project, a key part of the company’s long-term strategy, is aimed at sustaining annual production levels across its world-class iron ore operations.

Construction is already underway, with the new infrastructure including a primary crusher, overland conveyor system, and major upgrades to site support facilities. Once operational, the BS1 extension will process up to 34 million tonnes of iron ore per year, feeding Rio Tinto’s broader supply chain in the region.

Approximately 1,000 jobs will be created during construction, with first ore expected by 2027. Rio Tinto emphasized its commitment to working with local communities and Traditional Owners to deliver lasting benefits through jobs, training, and sustainable development.

The BS1 expansion reflects growing global demand for high-grade iron ore, driven by decarbonization and infrastructure growth.
