Te kwhiringa | The Opportunity  

The Tararua Alliance, a partnership between Tararua District Council and Downer, is seeking an experienced Water Treatment Operator, to help ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of our water treatment facilities. If you are skilled in water treatment processes and committed to maintaining a high-quality service for our communities, this could be your ideal role.

As a Water Treatment Operator, youll be responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of water treatment plants. Working in the Tararua District Council 3 Waters Team you will be reporting to the Water Treatment Leader ensuring that water supply systems are efficient, safe, and fully compliant with regulations and resource consent conditions. Youll work hand-on with modern telemetry and monitoring systems. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Operate and maintain water treatment plants and pump stations to required standards
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and quality assurance standards (e.g., drinking water quality, resource consent conditions)
  • Respond to public enquiries regarding water and quality, in line with Council policy
  • Conduct resource consent sampling and ensure full compliance with water quality assurance rules
  • Perform mechanical repairs, including dismantling, reassembling, and testing equipment
  • Maintain detailed records of treatment plants, pipelines, valves, and intake structures

Nga pkenga matua | Important Skills 

  • National Certificate in Water Treatment Site Operator (or equivalent) (skilled work experience can replace a formal qualification)
  • At least 3 years of relevant work experience in a similar role
  • Full, New Zealand Drivers Licence (or equivalent/eligible for conversion)

Additional skills that would be beneficial in this role, but not required: 

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedures
  • Experience in operating telemetry and automated systems
  • Chlorine Handling Certificate
