Purpose Statement

The Veterinary nurse is responsible for the daily provision of skilled surgical, anaesthesia and medical support to the Veterinarian.

In addition, they provide expert husbandry and care for hospitalised and quarantined exotic animals and also with the rescue/rehabilitation of Wildlife under the supervision of the Veterinarians. This position also assists in maintaining departmental facilities and equipment to the highest standards and ensuring that departmental nursing practices are followed and delivered to consistently meet current industry standards. Nurses liaise with wildlife carers and members of the public to provide exemplary care to indigenous wildlife.

Selection Criteria

  • Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing
  • Drivers Licence
  • Extensive experience working as a Qualified Veterinary Nurse with a variety of species.
  • Highly developed understanding of and demonstrated knowledge of current anaesthesia management in a variety of exotic and indigenous wildlife species.
  • Highly developed and demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, report and communicate on observations of animal behaviour, health and welfare.
  • A demonstrated high level of skill in problem solving, planning, coordinating activities and effective team work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of maintaining high levels of hygiene in a hospital environment and awareness of quarantine principles
  • Ability to represent the interests of Zoos Victoria in all areas related to captive animal management, husbandry, welfare, conservation, wildlife rescue and rehabilitation
  • Sound knowledge of and proficiency in all areas of nursing and animal husbandry – including capture and restraint of a wide range of exotic and indigenous species, diet and housing requirements and normal behaviours of a variety of exotic and indigenous Wildlife.
  • Strong ability to take initiative, work autonomously, follow SOPs and be flexible in order to reevaluate priorities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Zoos Victoria Vision & Values and support the five action areas – conservation, animals, people, visitors and financial sustainability.
