Deckhand Traineeship

This position is open to those who identify as Bailai, Gooreng Gooreng, Gurang and/or Taribelang Bunda mob.

This traineeship provides a general background in boating industry skills and knowledge. Deckhands operate and maintain equipment on the deck of a vessel and assist with docking and other operations.

The deckhands together make up the deck crew and are responsible for maintaining the ferry/barge other than the engine and other systems that are the responsibility of onboard engineers

Qualifications

On successful completion of your apprenticeship with Programmed, you will receive: Certificate III in Boat Service

Tasks

Throughout your traineeship, you will gain skills and experience across areas including:

Performs any combination of following duties aboard watercraft:

  • Handles lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines.
  • Sweeps and washes decks, using broom, brushes, mops, and firehose.
  • Lowers and mans lifeboat in case of emergencies.
  • Stands steering watches or lookout watches while underway.
  • Moves controls or turns handwheels to raise or lower passenger or vehicle landing ramps.
  • Inserts blocks under wheels of vehicles to prevent them from moving on ferryboats.
  • Loads or unloads material from barges, scows, and dredges.

Prerequisites

In order to be considered as a potential candidate for a Deckhand Traineeship with Programmed, you will have:

  • A commitment to embracing a Zero Harm safety culture
  • A positive attitude, self-motivation and desire to learn new skills
  • Ability to take direction from supervisors and to ask questions
  • Good listening and communication skills
  • Interest in developing a career in the natural gas industry
  • Ability to get to the LNG facility ferry terminal to travel to Curtis Island
  • Some travel required for training
  • Must be able to swim
  • Working hours will vary in alignment with the host company

Duration and training

This traineeship is for 12 months and training will take place in Gladstone on Curtis Island. This training will be a mix of on-line & face to face learning as well as in the workplace activities. You will learn from experienced people, and be supported by the Programmed team.
