- Opportunity to help modernise Rail Control Systems in Victoria
- Represent Government interests within the sector
- Collins St location, hybrid working available
The Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) brings together all transport modes to design, plan, build and operate Victoria’s transport system. Our job is to further integrate the transport network and improve the delivery of services to Victorians for simpler, quicker and safer journeys that connect people and places and support Victoria’s prosperity and liveability.
We’re focused on outcomes that deliver more choice, connections and confidence in our travel, ensuring the whole transport network works as one to deliver better services and outcomes.
The Assets and Engineering Division (A&E) enables a safe, resilient and fit-for-purpose Victorian transport system through whole of lifecycle decisions based on systematic and disciplined technical excellence. A&E influences each stage of the Victorian transport asset lifecycle to realise a reliable transport network for our communities, through policy, planning, investment and technical standards. Our work optimises the value and sustainability of allocated resources (capital and operating) across the Victorian transport portfolio and its asset base.
The Specialist Engineer Rail Control Systems sits within the Standards and Transport Engineering Branch (STE) of A&E and reports to the Principal Engineer Rail Control Systems. This position will also have a link to the Strategic Advisor, Signalling & Operational Technology, who is DTP’s key interface within the Strategic Signalling Taskforce (SST), who sit within the Victorian Infrastructure Delivery Authority (VIDA).
DTP recently endorsed a signalling strategy that sets the future technology direction to steer renewal and investment decisions at a network and corridor level. This strategy endorses the future rail technology shift away from conventional signalling and towards advanced communications-based train control systems to support an integrated transition to digital systems. DTP now requires integrated rail systems capability together with specialist skills in modern train control technologies such as the European Train Control System (ETCS) and Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC).
The Specialist Engineer is a new role that will be key in supporting the functions of the Rail Control Systems (RCS) team by supporting the development of the network technical and maintenance requirements, planning and coordinating technical activities ensuring compliance to DTP requirements, and investigating and resolving technical issues as they arise. You will provide engineering and technical services advice to the Department and its stakeholders with respect to planning, development, delivery and operation of all public transport RCS and other supporting infrastructure across the asset lifecycle. Additionally, you will be the Department’s representative at various safety and design workshops, representing the Department’s interests within the sector.
As a qualified engineer, you will bring considerable experience within RCS, and be able to position yourself as an expert within the Department and with external stakeholders. When it comes to RCS, experience in digital train control systems (CBTC / EBTC) will be extremely highly regarded as you will help develop the Signaling and RCS disciplines for DTP. Alongside your technical engineering skills, you will bring a willingness to learn and play a key role in modernising RCS across the state.
