About the role and team
We have an opportunity for a Senior Associate or Special Counsel with experience in defendant public and product liability, professional indemnity and medical malpractice claims to join our thriving General Insurance team based in our Newcastle or Sydney office.
This role sits within our General Insurance section, which has around 230 team members nationally. The team has extensive expertise in the health professions and care sectors Australia-wide. We advise on a broad range of professional indemnity, public liability, product liability and disciplinary claims.
This role will focus primarily on defending medical negligence claims and acting in coronial proceedings and inquests. This role suits a senior practitioner who is comfortable taking carriage of their own files (with appropriate supervision), and who is also looking to grow their client following and practice over time, in a supportive environment.
You will be involved in a range of matters, including:
- medical malpractice litigation and catastrophic claims;
- advising on complex liability, causation, contribution and quantum issues;
- coronial inquests and investigations;
- disciplinary proceedings involving healthcare professionals; and
- public liability and professional indemnity matters.
About you
You will ideally have the following skills and experience:
- at least six years of post-admission experience in defendant insurance law;
- ideally you will have significant experience in defending medical indemnity claims;
- experience in disciplinary matters is advantageous, but not essential;
- experience in dust diseases litigation is advantageous, but not essential;
- interpersonal and client management skills, as well as proven experience in business development;
- a genuine interest in leading the continued growth and success of our medical negligence practice;
- the ability and willingness to supervise and mentor junior members of the team; and
- clear, concise legal writing skills and outstanding attention to detail.
