For more than 40 years, the North Qld Export Terminal, located at the Port of Abbot Point, has demonstrated its commitment to safety, efficiency, responsibility, and partnership with the local community.
APO has been contracted by North Queensland Export Terminal Pty Ltd to manage operations of its coal export terminal at the Port of Abbot PointAustralias northernmost coal portlocated 25 kilometres north of Bowen, between Townsville and Mackay, serving as the gateway to the Whitsundays.
Abbot Point Operations has an exciting opportunity for a Health and Safety Specialist to join our team and play a pivotal role in enhancing safety performance, ensuring compliance, and driving continuous improvement across the site. Reporting directly to the HSEC Manager, you will provide expert guidance and practical support to operational teams, influence safety culture, and help embed best-practice health, safety, and environmental processes across all areas of the terminal. What Youll Do:
- Drive visible safety leadership through engagement with teams, supervisors, and contractors, fostering a positive safety culture across the site
- Monitor and deliver Critical Risk services, documenting processes and advising leaders on improvements
- Oversee permit management processes, ensuring documentation and capability are in place, and advise on process design and improvements
- Lead and support incident investigations, including report writing and implementing investigation outcomes
- Prepare and facilitate workshops, toolbox talks, safety communication forums, and committee meetings
- Provide advice to the business on application of all health and safety processes, including onboarding contractors and work authorisation procedures
- Conduct inspections, audits, and operational control checks to ensure ISO compliance and adequate evidence capture
- Manage risk in accordance with the risk management framework and support continuous improvement initiatives
- Maintain and manage health and safety and risk management records, policies, and procedures
- Support Return to Work and rehabilitation processes for injured workers
- Execute health and safety improvement projects and promote health and wellbeing programs
- Provide mentoring and support to key stakeholders, ensuring best-practice health and safety practices are embedded
What Were Looking For:
- Proven experience in health and safety management within industrial, port, or heavy industry operations
- Strong understanding of Critical Risk management, permit systems, incident investigation, and risk assessment
- Experience conducting audits, inspections, and HS process reviews, including ISO compliance
- Ability to provide practical advice and support across operational teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to influence at all levels
- Demonstrated ability to role model constructive safety leadership and engage teams positively
- Relevant safety qualifications.
