Director & Chief Safety Engineer – QLD Office of Industrial Relations

As part of the Queensland Department of Education, the Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) improves work health and safety in Queensland and helps to reduce the risk of workers being killed or injured on the job, as well as developing and enforcing standards for electrical safety in Queensland, regulating workers’ compensation, and supporting improved productivity and fairness in Queensland workplaces. The Engineering Services unit is an integral part of the Specialised Health and Safety Services directorate, and consists of engineers with expertise in construction, mechanical, civil, electrical and electronic systems engineering specialising in the provision of technical advice, training and auditing of high-risk plant design applications.
The Director and Chief Safety Engineer will lead the Engineering Services unit and inspire and mentor engineering specialists to plan, develop and implement strategies designed to safeguard the occupational safety of those exposed to complex and emerging technologies. Your advice will inform the development of legislation, policy and practices that enhance the capability of Work Health and Safety Queensland in addressing occupational safety issues.
This will involve co-ordinating and monitoring services to align with OIR’s strategic objectives and leading financial, material and people matters in line with relevant policies and standards. This position also provides expert advice to the Minister, Deputy Director-General, executive and other internal and external clients on the technical aspects of occupational safety. The Director and Chief Safety Engineer will also oversee and coordinate aspects of incident investigations which require the analysis of failure in structural/material, electrical/electronic and mechanical/hydraulic/pneumatic systems and their contribution to incidents.
To be successful in this role, you will have high-level engineering skills as evidenced by successful interventions to improve safety outcomes for workers combined with the ability to lead a high-performance engineering team. You will also have strong interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated by successfully leading technical or contentious matters before senior public officials, courts, media, peers and/or senior industry and union officials.
Your experience evaluating safety programs in response to new and emerging technologies will be highly regarded, as will the ability to get up to speed quickly with regards to Queensland’s workplace health and safety legislation and legislative process and build relationships with key occupational health stakeholders across government and non-government organisations. A degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline is essential, as is registration or eligibility to apply for registration with the Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland.
