Odyssey Victoria offers two rounds of student intake per year. October applications are for placements in the first half of the following year.  Applications in April are for placements in the second half of the year.

Student placement – Therapeutic Community Bairnsdale

Location

For this placement, you would be based at the Residential Rehabilitation Bairnsdale.

Eligibility

  • Bachelor of Social Work (Honours)

Final year undergraduate students, with previous placement experience or relevant work experience are preferred.

  • Diploma in Mental Health or Community Services

Your placement would include:

  1. Observing and learning how a Therapeutic Community functions: Observing and learning about the various clinical interventions that are utilised. Being exposed to and learning about the various processes required to maintain and keep a house of approximately 80 people operating. Observing conflict resolutions group Observing and being involved in creating individual treatment planning. Observing and being involved in clinical reviews, case conferences and meetings.
  2. Being involved in Community based activities and events Supporting the planning of special community events such as important calendar dates or sports activities as required

For Social Work Students

  • A day in the life of this position includes working with the clinical team to support the recovery journey of residents by providing therapeutic interventions as required in a formal group setting, interacting with residents in informal activities like eating lunch together or supporting a project they are working on in the grounds of the facility. Developing individual treatment plans and providing brief interventions in small focus groups. You will participate in clinical reviews and clinical supervision.

For Diploma Students

  • A day in the life of this position includes working with the clinical team to support the recovery journey of residents by observing and supporting therapeutic interventions as required in a formal group setting, interacting with residents in informal activities like eating lunch together or supporting a project they are working on in the grounds of the facility.
