BHP Appoints Ross McEwan as New Chairman

BHP, the world’s largest listed mining company, has announced the appointment of Ross McEwan as its new chairman, effective March 31, 2025. The move signals a potential strategic shift for the global mining giant as it navigates leadership changes and evolving market dynamics.

McEwan, well-known for his previous roles as CEO of National Australia Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland, has served as a non-executive director at BHP since April 2024. His deep experience in finance and corporate governance is expected to strengthen BHP’s board as it enters a new phase of growth and transition.

He will succeed Ken MacKenzie, who has held the chairman role since 2017. One of McEwan’s first major responsibilities will be overseeing the selection of BHP’s next CEO, as current chief executive Mike Henry prepares for a possible exit within the next 18 months.

Industry analysts speculate that McEwan’s appointment could lead to a renewed focus on shareholder returns, capital discipline, and potential acquisitions in energy-transition minerals such as copper, nickel, and potash.

This leadership change comes at a time when BHP is pivoting toward future-facing commodities and evaluating its long-term strategy in a rapidly changing global mining landscape.
