Mining Jobs at Risk? What the 2025 Budget Means for You

The 2025 Federal Budget is here, and while it promises tax cuts and energy rebates, the big question for Australia’s miners is: Will this budget help or hurt the industry? With billions pouring into green energy and critical minerals, some mining jobs will thrive while others may be at risk. Here’s what you need to know.

Winners: Critical Minerals & Green Metals

The government is doubling down on Australia’s critical minerals sector, pouring billions into production incentives. This includes:

  • $13.7 billion in tax credits for hydrogen and critical minerals production.
  • $1 billion for green iron projects, including a major boost for Whyalla steelworks.
  • $750 million for green metals, supporting industries that process Australian-mined materials.

For workers in lithium, nickel, rare earths, and hydrogen, this budget signals growth, investment, and more jobs. If you’re in these fields, expect demand for skilled labor to increase.

Losers: Traditional Mining Jobs Under Pressure

Not all mining sectors are winners. The push toward low-emission manufacturing and renewable energy could mean fewer opportunities in coal and high-emission metals. With no direct support for these industries, workers in traditional mining roles may face job uncertainty as companies shift focus or cut costs.

What About Wages?

The budget delivers tax cuts, meaning more take-home pay for workers:

  • If you earn $79,000 a year, you’ll pocket an extra $5.15 per week in 2025-26 and $10.30 per week by 2027-28.
  • The tax rate for incomes between $18,201 and $45,000 will drop from 16% to 14% by 2027.

However, these savings might not be enough to offset rising costs of living and potential job instability in certain mining sectors.

Is Your Job Safe?

The mining industry is shifting. While critical minerals and green metals are on the rise, traditional mining sectors may struggle without new investments. If you work in coal or iron ore, now might be the time to upskill or transition into high-demand areas like lithium, rare earths, or green steel.

This budget could mark the beginning of a major shift in mining jobs.
